Death Knight Tanking Guide

A tank has to do three things to be an effective member of a team. First and foremost, they must generate more threat than the healer on all targets. (Threat is the numerical value which is used to establish priority on the aggro table. The character at the top of the aggro table will be the focus of a mob’s attention.) The healer will generate threat on all enemies when they heal the tank, and it’s the tank’s responsibility to keep the enemies off the healer by staying ahead of them on threat. Second, they must survive. Survival is (at minimum) a two-person job; both the tank and the healer are responsible for survival. For the tank, survival comes either by avoiding hits, reducing the severity of incoming damage, or establishing a vast pool of hit points (thereby increasing their longevity in battle). Survival and out-threating the healer partially go hand-in-hand – with better mitigation the tank will require less healing, which means less threat for the healer. A tank’s third responsibility is generating extra threat on the primary target to allow the damage dealers to kill it effectively. Note that it is not the tank’s job to generate more threat than the damage dealers, it is their job to stay below the tank’s threat.

The first two of these are the most important as if they fail at them then the tank or the healer will die and the group will wipe very shortly after. The third is also important in the long run, as if the damage dealers have to hold back then the enemies will die too slowly and the healer will run out of mana.

Another issue that many DK tanks have is the desicion to dual wield tanking swords or use a DPS 2-Handed Weapon. Originally, before patch 3.3 the only real DK tanking enchant available to runeforging was Rune of The Stoneskin Gargoyle, which enchanted 2-handers, making 2H the DK tanking weapons. However, with Patch 3.3, Rune of the Nerubian Carapace was added, giving a near equivalent enchant to 2 1-handers. Essentially, either works, but when dealing with hit-miss ratios and threat building, it is recommended to use a 2 hander.

Gruul’s Lair

Gruul’s Lair is located north of Ruuan Weald in the Blade’s Edge Mountains of Outland. Here, Gruul the Dragonkiller, the merciless gronn overlord, rules over the ogres of Blade’s Edge.

This raid contains two bosses, Gruul the Dragonkiller and High King Maulgar, and requires no attunement. The player must be at least level 65 and in a raid to enter.

This raid contains two bosses, Gruul the Dragonkiller and High King Maulgar. Notable loot includes the epic equipment tokens for the Tier 4 leg and shoulder pieces.

Encounters

To High King Maulgar

  • The first encounter in Gruul’s lair is one mob, either a Lair Brute or Gronn-Priest, that patrols up and down a long cavern. After him are two other randomly spawned mobs. The patrol can be pulled single, but the duo beyond must be done together. The first mob will call for help, but tanked next to the portal he will be too far to be heard by the next two mobs.
  • If only one of the pair of two mobs is killed, they will both respawn.
  • The mobs leading to High King are on a 1 hour timer.
  • When High King Maulgar is killed the gate on the far side of him will open and the mobs leading to him will no longer spawn.

To Gruul

  • When the gate is opened, there will be several mobs inside. All are randomly Gronn-Priests or Lair Brutes.
  • First pull is a double pull.
  • Second pull is a single pull that patrols from the first double pull to the fire.
  • Third pull is a double pull by the fire.
  • Fourth pull is a single patrol that leads from Gruul’s area to the fire.
  • The last pull is a triple pull at the end of cavern that leads to Gruul.
  • When Gruul is killed no mobs will spawn inside of his lair.

Quick Facts

  • Level: 70 – 73
  • Requires level 70
  • Territory: Contested
  • Instance type: Raid
  • Number of players: 25
  • Location: Blade’s Edge Mountains
  • Final boss: Gruul the Dragonkiller

Warrior Tank Guide

A tank is a character whose primary role is to absorb damage and prevent others from being attacked. Tanks are “meatshields”, so to speak, putting themselves between the mobs and the more vulnerable party members. The tank assumes the aggro of the mobs and tries to keep them off other group mates. With everyone nuking the same target (directed by the main assist), the mobs go down faster and there is less damage done to the group.

Because of the constant abuse upon their armor and weapons, high repair costs are a fixture in a tank’s life. An often-used abbreviation for tank is “MT” (main tank). The tank’s role must not be confused with the “MA” (Main Assist). Also used to contrast from a damage dealer or a healer.

Hunter Grouping Strategies

Hunter’s Role in a group

A Hunter can fulfill one of many Group Roles. Primarily, the Hunter is called to be a puller, an off tank, sustained DPS provider, pseudo wipe recoverer, and crowd controller.

General

  • Watch your pet. Your pet should almost always be set on Passive mode. Growl’s autocast should be turned off, and if you have a boar, Charge’s autocast generally should be as well, since the skill is bugged and will break Crowd Control if present.
The biggest dangers a pet can pose is when chasing after runners (make sure you call your pet back when a mob begins to run) and when jumping off of cliffs. When you jump off a cliff or a ledge, your pet will take the long way and will trigger every mob on the way and bring it to you and your group (note that this only applies when you drop onto a ledge accessible by another route; in the case of a ledge only accessible by dropping from above, the pet will drop down with you). When you need to jump off a ledge, either dismiss your pet or use Eyes of the Beast to force your pet to jump off. Better yet, put your pet on stay and move forward yourself, calling your pet again once it is out of range. This allows you to avoid the happiness penalty normally incurred by using the Dismiss spell. Let your group know that you will be watching your pet.

World of Warcraft Paladin Overview

The Paladin

Guardians of the Holy Light, paladins bolster their allies with holy auras and blessing to protect their friends from harm and enhance their powers. Wearing heavy armor, they can withstand terrible blows in the thickest battles while healing their wounded allies and resurrecting the slain. In combat, they can wield massive two-handed weapons, stun their foes, destroy undead and demons, and judge their enemies with holy vengeance. Paladins are a defensive class designed to outlast their opponents.

The Paladin is a mix of a melee fighter and a secondary spell caster. The Paladin is ideal for groups due to the Paladin’s healing, Blessings, and other abilities. Paladins can have one active aura per Paladin on each party member and use specific Blessings for specific players. Paladins are pretty hard to kill, thanks to their assortment of defensive abilities. The Paladin can also heal with Holy Light, unlike other combat classes. The Paladin is an Undead specific fighter as well, with several abilities designed to be used against the Undead.

I find that a lot of the guides here are geared toward players who have high-level characters that might be familiar with a lot of specialized gear. This made Auctioneer a little difficult for me to get a hang of, and I lost about 10 G that I borrowed from another player when I first installed it.

Much of the advice given here is “Know your market”. However, I think I would like to write something that’s geared for the person who’s just bought the game and is experiencing smelting bronze for the first time, or for the elf preparing for his first-ever run through the Deadmines, or for the Tauren woman learning about the majestic Barrens with her newly-tamed cougar running at her side.

Pricing your Gathered Goods

A lot of people use Auctioneer for buying and reselling. However, if you’re a fresh new player, you can install Auctioneer and use it for selling, as well. It helps price your goods so you can post what you gather for a good price, without the hassle of calculating prices on your own. Here’s a step-by-step guide to selling trade goods on the AH, aimed for a new player.

Choose a Gathering Profession

When you hit Level 5, choose a gathering profession. These are one of Mining, Skinning, or Herbalism, and to a limited extent, Enchanting. If you want more money, you can choose two, but I find that it’s less fun than choosing an appropriate crafting skill to go with your gathering skill.

At this stage, I’d recommend that you choose a profession that you want to do, instead of what makes you the most money. Every gathering profession gives you the opportunity to get rich. However, if you want to get rich quickly, I recommend mining.

Gather

Go out and gather a lot of stuff. It might be light leather, linen cloth, copper ore, rough stone, strange dust, whatever. Gather a few stacks of it.

  • Copper ore and rough stone are acquired from mining veins and are common in newbie regions. If you’re Alliance, Dun Morogh and Elwynn Forest are loaded with copper ore. As Horde, explore Durotar and Tirisfal Glades, as well as the mountains of Mulgore for copper ore. Don’t forget to buy a mining pick!
  • Humanoids drop linen cloth abundantly.
  • Herbs, such as peacebloom and silverleaf, are available in rich quantities in the newbie areas. You may also be able to find earthroot and mageroyal, both of which sell for more than peacebloom and silverleaf.
  • You can skin beasts and some humanoids (such as worgen) for light leather at lower levels. You will also often end up with ruined scraps, but these rarely sell in the auction house. Use them to make light leather if you have leatherworking.
  • If you’re an enchanter, you can disenchant green weapons and armour to obtain strange dust and magic essence.

Posting Auctions with Auctioneer

Go to Auctioneer and do a scan. The scan button is at the bottom of your auction house interface. The process will take 10–15 minutes, and you cannot move away from the auctioneer at this point in time. It is best to take a break at this point.

Click on the “Post Auction” tab and drag a stack of whatever you want to sell into the Item Slot. Auctioneer will suggest a starting price and a buyout price. You can also change the number of stacks you wish to post (which makes selling large amounts very easy).

Now, there’s one section that people that I show Auctioneer get confused about, and that’s the text right beneath “Price Based On: Auctioneer Price” bar.

There is either:

  • No Competition. This means that you’re the ONLY person selling this item on the Auction House right now.
  • Undercutting by n%. This means that there’s competition, but your price is going to be cheaper than your competition by n%.
  • Competition above market. This means that your competition is selling their goods for way above the estimated market price calculated by Auctioneer. Good for you — this means that your price is probably the best one.
  • Competition below market. This means that your competition is selling their goods for way below the estimated market price calculate by Auctioneer. Bad for you as a gatherer. Good for you as a reseller.

If the text shows anything OTHER than “Competition below market”, then I suggest that you post your herbs, skins, or ore for whatever the price Auctioneer suggests.

The reason that Auctioneer is great is that it saves YOU time while giving you a good return on your labour. You’re going to sell your goods because your prices are low, but it saves time because you no longer need to calculate what a good price for your trade goods are. You can also post multiple stacks with one trip to the Auction House. The only thing you need to do is a scan every session before you post your goods, which will take about 10-15 minutes.

(A note. Many people suggest that you scan with Auctioneer for about a week before trusting its prices. This is true, but only when you’re buying. I’ve found that if you want to sell items with quick turnaround time, such as trade goods, then you can safely scan the market and post your goods immediately after. This is because Auctioneer takes a snapshot and sets your selling price based only on the competition on the AH at the time of your scan.)

Wait For Sales

Now, you need to wait for people to see your auction and buy it. Go do some quests, or logout. Wait a day or so. You’ll soon enough notice that your auctions have most likely sold.

So why is this? This is because when you did your scan and posted, your trade goods were the cheapest of anyone’s on the market at that moment, meaning that yours are going to sell first. As long as you keep posting items on the AH, you’ll be bringing in money, which is very important if you’re just starting the game and have barely enough money to train.

Just remember to scan the Trade Goods before you sell your herbs, ore, skins, or enchanting materials.

And that’s the most basic way that you can make Auctioneer work for you.

Later, I’m sure that you’ll develop a few variations of this strategy, like learning not to post too much when prices are low, stocking your materials in the bank and posting them only when the price is high, and so forth, but this is the most basic way to make lots of money.

Becoming a Reseller

I’d cover this, but many other people have covered it in the other Documentation sections. Take a look! They’re really good.

The only thing I recommend is that you gather a few gold pieces before you start. You can start reselling with as little as 5G, but make sure that is money you don’t need at the moment.

Miscellaneous Tips

Here are a few common mistakes I’ve found when using Auctioneer.

  • Don’t buy anything until you know the market. This might require you to do a week’s worth of Auctioneer scanning, as well as a lot of investigation of what people end up buying and selling, as well as actually playing the game and listening to people you group with. The more you play and the more you pay attention to equipment that you want, as well as the more professions you get (with alts), then the more you will learn the general WoW market, as well as a few specifics.
  • Since all characters of the same faction on the same server share AH data, create a level 1 alt and run it to the local AH. Configure the auctioneer to exit after a scan using the “/auctioneer finish exit” slash command. Each night before quiting (or in the morning before work/school) log in using your alt and scan the AH. Goto bed/work/school knowing you have up-to-date AH information when you return. For morning scans take it a step further and create a batch file that launches WoW and then calls shutdown (XP only). Now when the scan is complete, your machine will turn itself off.
  • Some general tips to go along with your new-found AH data:
    • Turn on the trade channel. Pay attention to what enchants people are asking for, and see if you can get the materials for those. Also see what people are looking to buy.
    • Watch how prices fluctuate especially on the weekend. Note that Auctioneer doesn’t give you any data of cyclical trends, so you have to observe these yourself. What I’ve noticed most obviously is that trade goods spike during the week, and drop during the weekend.
    • Watch the Transactions page carefully before posting anything you buy from the AH to make sure you’re actually getting a good return. Many things happen in an hour in WoW and it’s easy to get less of a deal than you think.
    • Trade goods, especially basic goods gathered by gathering skills have an extremely fast turnaround time. They’re great if you need cash in 24 hours or less, but not nearly as good for making the big big bucks. Think of trade goods as your local bonds.
  • If you can’t sell something, don’t just keep posting it again and again on the AH. Try the trade channel. Wait for a weekend before selling. Lower the price. Remember, if you buy something for 3G and can’t resell it for 6G, then try selling it for 5 or 4. In the worst case, you’ll sell it for a loss, but instead of losing 3G, you’ll only lose 1G. If you’re desperate, I find that going on Trade and threatening to Vendor something usually gets you a response (as long as you’re willing to actually accept a price around the vendor’s price). I bought a recipe for 5G, couldn’t sell it for two weeks, probably most an additional 1 G in deposits. Instead of keeping it as money sink, I threatened to vendor it for 1G and eventually got 2G for it. Sure, I lost 4G, but that’s not a big deal when you made 60G in the past week.
  • When you’re selling items, generally, the order that people go is Trade Goods, then Recipes, then Weapons and Armour. The last one is where the real money is at, but it’s also the toughest to figure out. If you are not willing to take risky investments and buying out 10-25G items, then it’s best to keep doing recipes and trade goods until you have enough money.

Bagnon

Bagnon is an addon that merges all of your bags into three frames: One for your inventory, one for your bank, and one for your keyring. Beyond the basic all-in-one inventory functionality, Bagnon also provides the following features:

  • Items can be colored based on quality
  • Quest items can be highlighted
  • Text searching (see syntax below)
  • Offline viewing of inventory information from your other characters (via Bagnon_Forever or Bagnon_Armory)
  • Databroker plugin support. Both the inventory and bank frames allow you to display a databroker plugin in the bottom left corner. I find this works well with things like Currency Tracker

Included Addons:

  • Bagnon – Provides single window displays for your inventory, bank, and keyring
  • Bagnon_Config – Provides a means of configuring said frames :P
  • Bagnon_Forever – Enables the ability to view your character’s bank, or items from any other character on the same server, from anywhere. (You need to log onto each character at least once for this to work).
  • Bagnon_Tooltips – When hovering over an item, this tells you who has an item, and where.

Slash Commands:

  • All commands can start with either /bagnon or /bgn
  • /bagnon keys – Toggles the keyring frame
  • /bagnon bags – Toggles the inventory frame
  • /bagnon bank – Toggles the bank frame
  • /bagnon config – Displays the main options menu

Search Syntax:

  • Bagnon 2.0 uses the same search syntax as Combuctor.
  • Typing a search without any modifiers will perform a “smart” search. For example, typing “armor” will find all items of type “armor” as well as any items containing the word “armor”.
  • To find an item by name, simply type the items name. Typing “silk” will find all items that have “silk” in their name.
  • To find an item by type, subtype, or equip location, type t:<search>. “t:weapon” will find all weapons. “t:main” will find all main hand items.
  • To find an item by quality, type q:<quality>. “q:epic” will find all epic items. You can also use a quality number. “q:0″ will find all grey items.
  • To find an item by name, type n:<name>. “n:muffins” will find all items with names containing “muffins”.
  • To find items in an equipment set, type s:<equipmentSet>. “s:fire” will find all items in equipment sets you have with names that start with “fire”.
  • Searches can be negated using the ! operator. “!q:epic” will find all items that are NOT epic.
  • A union of two searches can be performed using the | operator. Typing “q:epic|t:weapon” will find all items that are either epic OR weapons.
  • An intersection of two searches can be performed using the & operator. Typing “q:epic&t:weapon” will find all items that are epic AND weapons
  • The following search keywords are also supported:
    • boe – Bind on equip items.
    • quest – Items with “quest item” in their tooltips.
    • bop – Bind on pickup items.
    • boa – Bind on account items.
    • bou – Bind on use items

Gear Score 3.1.16

This new version doesn’t work with non-US localizations but I promise I’m going to re-write it to fix this as soon as I can. I plan to have EVERYTHING translated as much as I can so I’ll have to go back.

IMPORTANT! – To use the new features you must TARGET a player while they are in inspection range. This is a limitation on the API. In order to view your own information you must Target yourself.

What is GearScore?

  • GearScore is an addon for World of Warcraft that allows you to quickly and easily judge a player’s level of Gear. Simply mouse-over any player in the game and their GearScore will appear in their tooltip. No need to visit the armory!
  • GearScore represents the maximum potential for a player to perform. The higher your GearScore the higher your potential to heal/dps/tank. Remember however, that is is up to the player’s skill to match that potential.
  • GearScoreAddon Official Website: http://www.GearScoreAddon.com
  • (Get the latest news, updates, info about upcoming features and of course download the newest beta versions!)
  • Use ” /GS ” to open your new UI.
  • For a slimmed down version with minimal system impact check out GearScoreLite

How does GearScore Work?

  • Whenever you mouseover a player in the game GearScore will scan that player’s gear and calculate a score. The scores are based on how blizzard assigns stats to an item and take in account ilevel, rarity, and equipment slot location. Scores scale smoothly as player’s level up and obtain new items.
  • Everyone who uses the mod shares information about the scores they scan allowing you to search for player’s you’ve never even seen before.

What are GearScore’s features?

  • Instant Score Calculation – Scores are calculated instantly whenever you mouse over any player in the game as long as they are within inspect range.
  • In-Game Armory – Allows you to view any player in your database’s equipment and GearScore
  • Database – Scores are remembered so that the next time you see a player you will know their score, even if they are in a completely different zone. The database feature also allows you to manually look up a player anytime you want 1000 faster then the armory.
  • Communication – Whenever you scan a GearScore of a player you also share that score with everyone in your party or raid and everyone in your guild. This is very similar to how Gatherer works in sharing resource nodes.
  • Average iLevel – With this feature you can also see the average item level of a player. This is perfect for such things as Ulduar vehicle assignment and upcoming changes to drakes in 3.2
  • Master Loot Upgrade Mode – This mode is an excellent way to assist your raid in increasing their overall level of gear as quick as possible. Whenever you mouse over an item the tooltip will show how much of an upgrade in GearScore that item is for each person in your raid that can equip that item. Prefect for loot-council type raiding guilds and also excellent for leveling characters in helping to choose which item to pick from quest rewards.
  • Reporting – GearScore also allows you to post the GearScores of player’s in your raid/party into chat. GearScore even has integration with Recount to allow you to see a graphical representation of your raid’s GearScores.

How does GearScore compare to ‘ratings’ websites?

  • I started working on GearScore before I even knew of WoW-heroes or IMBA. I’m not sure how IMBA calculates its scores but WoW-Heroes scores are always about 1/2 of GearScore’s scores. Many people ask me to simply use the same formula these websites do. There are a few problems with that. The first is I don’t wish to steal a formula from a website and brand it as inline with their scores. Those sites make $$ from advertisers and if I steal their work I’m also stealing their money. Another problem with this is that the armory gives these websites more information then my mod, therefore they are able to take into account additional factors when calculating scores.

ZOMFG!!! GEAR DOESN’T EQUAL SKILL!!?

  • I agree completely. However many players like to PUG. When you pug your forced to invite people you don’t know. A really sucky player with high GearScore will do more dps then a really sucky player with low GearScore. PUGs dont have time for guild-type interviews each time they invite a player to their raid. PUGs usually have no idea of the skill a player has. So PUGs are forced to use the only factor they know, your quality of Gear. If you don’t like this style of gaming I recommend joining a guild where nobody cares what your GearScore is.
  • That being said, GearScore 3.x has new features that allow players to make smarter choices instead of simply dismissing you if your not at a bare minimum. The color chart for instances is colored from red to green to represent the difficulty a player might have in a particular instance. The in-game-armory function lets you see if a person’s GearScore is low because perhaps they are in PvP gear or wearing a Lance and overall helps you make a more informed decision.
